"Scratch below the surface of society, and you will always find a strong fascination with morbidity. While it may have become more obvious lately with the popularity of the supernatural in mainstream culture, even a casual flip through the Christian bible reveals multi-headed monsters, skin-melting diseases, women made of stars, and threats to split babies in half. Turkish artist Cenín celebrates this dark human tradition, creating gorgeous studies of the fantastical throughout her repertoire. By mixing a childlike playfulness and grim absurdity, Cenín invites her audience to explore the inner-depths of their minds."

Bazı sembolleri ve konuları çalışmalarınızda sıkça kullandığınızı görüyoruz, bunun ideolojik bir arka planı mı var?:
Cenin için yaşamın sırrını görmek ve onu yaratmak esastır. Onun dünyası, sezginin hâkimiyeti üzerine kurulmuştur. Materyal dünya ile gizli dünyanın "buluştuğu" yerde bulunan Cenin, sanatı duyu ötesi, ölüm sonrası ve doğum öncesi ile temas kurma vasıtası olarak algılamaktadırlar. O, kadim bir varlık olarak, bu dünyadaki serüveninin başlangıcından itibaren deneyimlerini farklı sembollerle ifade etmiştir. Evrensel mirasa ait olan ve bilinçdışında/duyu ötesinde saklanan bu ortak semboller, birer yankı, işaret ve telkindir. Cenin, gizli anlamların yerine geçerek, gizli dünyalara götüren bir kılavuzdur aslında.

Sizin için "ölüm" nedir? Hiç ölüme yakın bir deneyim yaşadınız mı?:
Her yaşamın, her varoluşun, sınamalar, doğmalar, ölmeler ve dirilmelerden ibaret olduğunu bilmekle birlikte ölüm de doğum da birer sorudur benim için.

Sanatınızda insanların ve hayvanların bağlantısı nedir?:
Cenin için bütün hayvanlar ve bitkiler bir arkadaş, bir kardeş, bir yoldaş, bir koruyucu, bir ailedir.

"I aim to hide while revealing and reveal while hiding," says Cenin. "My works seem to express a lot, while they actually hide many details in the meantime. And I'm also influenced by the state of limbo between a person's dark and light side; no one can hover between the two for a long period of time, and that reflects the subconscious. I also feel that my works are small parts of one huge artwork, and even I myself wonder about what will come next."

"I have an illustrative style and I don't see myself as a part of the tradition of painting. I use oil paints only as a means to convey my message. But apart from that, the fetus [a theme in Cenin's work] sees the world from 360 degrees, and I feel that it has a grasp of everything going on in the world and that it conveys messages to humanity, from a place everybody was once a part of, or will become a part of after death. It's actually a character that I created to face the realities that people are not aware of."

Cenin: "Art makes visible the things that are impossible in real life."
1-) Cenin, when did you first get interested in art? Do you have some memory in your childhood about your passion for the grotesque aesthetics?
I work on visual arts, in a real sense, since 2005. But I am interested in spectacular things since childhood. When we were in Rhodes with my family, while I was about 5 years old, we visited some churches. I remember that I was fascinated by the designs of the churches and statues in them. They made huge impacts on me. I am still under the influence of them.

2-) What´s the most fascinating thing about painting and drawing for you?
I guess it makes visible the things that are impossible in real life. We can put together the elements visually which will never come together. In addition, we can create an enchanting atmosphere provided by the illusions of the paint.

3.) Who or what inspires you in your personal life and work and what message do you want to communicate in your proposals?
I am impressed by my family, my cats Sumo and Pagan, all the animals and the people who can be honest and direct in relationships. Though I live a very isolated life... Via Cenin, I am sending some selected subconscious messages to the souls of people by my art. Thus I aim to create an existential difference on them.

4.) How would you describe your style? What ideas you try to explore in your work?
I have a poster looking style with illustratively and symbolically speaking. I do not behave as if there is no death like imposed by the postmodern way of life. The togetherness of life with death, the meaninglessness of existence, oscillating between dark and light, the universal and common layers of our reality are the things that I present in my art.

5.) What do you like about the macabre art? Do you feel it's a kind of beauty uncomprehend?
It's like a regression into early childhood to me… Both expressionistic and surrealistic… It has an existential depth which makes this in a very magnificent way.

6.) Your art is very surreal-what is the last dream that you can remember?
I used to write a dream journal ... I programmed myself to wake up in a dream for write everything I could remember; now, I do art to do that.

7.) Can you tell us details about: "The Apostle of Truth"
Basically it describes the longing for the matriarchal era... The world drifted to extinction because of the patriarchal structure.

8.) Which of your projects has given you more satisfaction? Do you have a favorite piece?
I love all of my work. I've spent a lot of labor for all, mentally, spiritually and physically.

9.) What are your future plans? Are you working on any particular projects right now?
My primary aim is to reach more people with my art... I work hard and I work a lot... I have already started a new work immediately.


Cenin "Sanat, gerçek hayatta imkansız görünen şeyleri görünür kılar."

1-) Cenin, sanatla ilk ne zaman ilgilenmeye başladın? Grotesk estetiğe olan tutkunla ilgili olarak çocukluğuna dair hatırladığın bir anı var mı? 
Görsel sanatlarla, gerçek anlamda, 2005 yılından beri uğraşıyorum. Ama görkemli şeylere çocukluğumdan beri ilgi duyuyorum. 5 yaşımdayken Rodos'ta kiliseleri dolaşıyorduk. Kiliselerin tasarımının, içerideki heykellerin beni çok etkilediğini hatırlıyorum. Adeta büyülenmiştim. Uzun bir süre de etkisinden kurtulamamıştım.

2-) Sanatla ilgili en muhteşem şey nedir senin için? 
Gerçek hayatta imkansız olan şeyleri görünür kılması sanırım. Resimle asla bir araya gelmeyecek unsurları bir araya getirebiliriz. Ayrıca boyanın sağladığı illüzyonla büyüleyici bir atmosfer yaratabiliriz.

3.) Özel hayatında seni kim ve ne en çok etkiliyor? Sanatsal önermende ilettiğin mesaj nedir? 
Ailemden, kedilerim Pagan ve Sumo'dan, bütün hayvanlardan, içten ve dolaysız ilişki kurabilen tüm insanlardan etkileniyorum. Gerçi çok izole bir yaşam sürdürüyorum ama… Sanatım yoluyla, Cenin vasıtasıyla, insanların ruhlarına, bilinçaltlarına seçilmiş bazı mesajlar gönderiyorum. Böylece onlarda varoluşsal bir farklılık yaratmayı amaçlıyorum.

4.) Stilini nasıl tanımlarsın? Çalışmalarında ne anlatmayı amaçlıyorsun?
İllüstratif, sembollerle konuşan, postervari bir stile sahibim. Postmodern hayatın dayattığı şekilde ölüm yokmuş gibi davranmıyorum. Aksine yaşamın ölümle birlikte varolduğunu, varoluşumuzun anlamsızlığını, aydınlık ve karanlık arasında salınmayı, evrensel ve ortak gerçekliğimizin katmanlarını ortaya çıkarıyorum.

5.) Ürkütücü sanatta hoşuna giden ne? Anlaşılamamış bir güzellik olduğunu düşünüyor musun?
Benim için çocukluğa geri dönmek gibi… Hem dışavurumcu, hem de gerçeküstü… Varoluşsal bir derinliğe sahip ve elbette bunu çok görkemli bir biçimde yapıyor. 

6.) Sanatın çok gerçeküstü, hatırladığın son rüyayı anlatır mısın?
Eskiden rüya günlüğü tutardım… Kendimi programlamıştım, rüya gördüğüm an yanı başımdaki deftere yazıyordum, ama artık resim yapıyorum. 

7.) "The Apostle of Truth" "Gerçeğin Havarisi" isimli çalışmandan bahseder misin?
Temelde anaerkil döneme olan özlemi anlatıyor… Ataerkil düzenle dünya yokoluşa sürüklendi çünkü.

8.) Hangi çalışmaların daha çok hoşuna gidiyor? En çok sevdiğin hangisi? 
Bütün çalışmalarımı çok seviyorum. Zihinsel, ruhsal ve fiziksel olarak hepsi için çok emek harcadım. 

9.) Geleceğe dair planların neler? Şu an belirli bir proje üzerine çalışıyor musun?
Sanatımı daha çok insana ulaştırmak… Çok ve disiplinli çalışırım, elbette hemen yeni bir esere başladım bile.
