Ezgi Aksoy, a very talented friend & writer from Yeni Harman magazine, asked for my opinion about "voyuerism & culture, capitalism, state, art, etc... relation" for her essay, and I interpreted it as both visually and written (Turkish-English).

p.s.: I don't like my Turkish to English translation of course, I know it's awful. If someone wants to correct it I would be happy.

"Hepimiz voyuer (dikizci), hafif tabiriyle izleyiciyiz, ama her şeyden önce birilerinin gözünde (devlet, şirketler, medya vs.) tüketiciyiz, zaten bu kültürün içine doğuyoruz. Asli görevi tüketim kültürünü yaymak olan, ki bunu reklam arası dizi ve programlarla yaşam tarzlarını göstererek yapar, televizyon ve film endüstrisi ile yayılan voyuerism ise özel hayatları evimizin içine taşıdı. Şimdi bu süreç, tv’de reality şovlar, internet ve sosyal paylaşım ağlarının kullanımıyla doruk noktasına ulaştı.

Teknoloji, hala, öncelikli olarak askeri amaçlarla geliştiriliyor (misal internet), sonra şirketler kanalıyla tüketim endüstrisinin emrine giriyor. Zaten, devletler de artık şirketlerin kontrolünde... Bu durumda devletin yaptığı izlemeler de aslında şirketlere veri sağlamak için kullanılmış oluyor.

Herkes öyle de ya da böyle ünlü olmak istiyor, illa TV’de 15 dakika görünmeniz gerekmez, facebook da işinizi görebilir. Elbette her şey izleniyor ve izlenmeye devam edecek, biz de izliyoruz, yapay etkinliklere katılıyoruz, paketlenmiş kültür endüstrisini tüketmeye devam ediyoruz.

Çağdaş sanat daha da voyuerism'e hizmet eden, "satılabilir" işlerle ilgiyi üzerine çekmeye çalışacak (misal Jeff Koons'un "Dirty-Jeff on Top" işinde Cicciolina ile sevişmesi ve bize bunu dikizlettirmesi gibi). Kenarda köşede yeşermesine izin verilen alt kültürleri, ana akım kültürün içine çekerek kendini sözde “yenileyen” kültür endüstrisi bize “yeni” ürünler sunmaya devam edecek. Bu Lady Gaga, iphone ya da Muhteşem Yüzyıl dizisinin takıları şeklinde olabilir. Bundan sonra önemli olan tek şey her şeyin “satılabilir” olması. Tüm bunlardan rahatsız mısınız? O zaman önce evinizdeki elektronik aletlerin fişini çekin ya da iyisi mi dağlara çıkın, çünkü artık kaçış yok."

"We are “voyuers” (peeper) or “viewers” in the simplest term, but above all, we are all consumers in the eyes of government, corporations, media, etc. We are already born into this culture. The main duty of voyuerism is to spread the culture of consumption, which makes this showing the private lifes and new life styles on television and films (with ads, series and programs), and which means voyuerism moved into our house with television and film industry. Now this process has reached its peak through the usage of internet &social networking and reality shows on TV.

The technology, still being developed primarily for military purposes (for example internet), then it is being entered into consumption industry’s order. States are in control of the companies... In this case, the monitoring of the state is also using for providing datas for companies.

Everyone wants to be famous one way or another... You do not need necessarily to be seen on the TV for 15 minutes, facebook does the same job. Of course, everything is watched and will continue to be monitored, and we are watching, participating in events virtually, we continue to consume packaged products of culture industry.

Contemporary art world will try to attract people’s attention on "marketable” works much more (for example Jeff Koons's work "Dirty-Jeff on Top" showing us sexual intercourse with ex-wife&porn star Cicciolina). Sub-cultures are allowed to grow on the edge of corner. When the day comes, sub cultures are being pulled into the mainstream culture for renewing culture industry. So that it will continue to offer "new" products. It may be in the form of Lady Gaga, iphone, or jewelry series of Magnificent Century (a popular series showing on Turkish TV channel). After that, the only thing that matters is just “marketability” of all things. Does it bothers you?.. First of all, pull the plug on all electronic equipments in your home or the best of all, go to the mountains, because you can not escape from it."
